Summary
Suspense. One day, three years ago, Alison De Laurentiis mysteriously disappeared. She left the other four girls in their popular posse to fend for themselves in high school. She left her too-good-to-be-true popular life which all girls dreamed about. She left her family. She left behind shocking secrets. For years Aria, Spencer, Emily, and Hannah have been trying to move past their best friend's tragic disappearance. Of course they grieved for Ali, but inside, all four girls were relieved. The girl who criticized your outfits, called you fat or uncool, made you do everything she wanted to do, made fun of your crush, was the most popular, the prettiest...and so on, was gone. It's strange. In middle school, when Ali, Aria, Spencer, Emily, and Hannah became friends, all of them were dying for Ali's attention. She made them feel special and loved. All four girls obviously miss obsessing over the latest name brand fashions and ruling the school, but now they were trying to discover themselves. Just when they thought their lives were becoming somewhat "normal" Aria, Spencer, Emily, and Hannah start receiving random texts with their deepest secrets from A. After Ali's disappearance, these four friends who stuck together like glue, started drifting apart. Hannah started hurting herself to become thinner and was now one of the prettiest girls. Aria tried to deal with her parent's divorce and her complicated relationship with her English teacher, Ezra. Emily tries to deal with her competitive swimming life and her confusing interest in girls. Spencer tried to match and outdo her perfect sister, Mellisa, in academics and extra-curricular activities. Ali's dead body is found buried under the concrete of her backyard. At Ali's memorial, all of them tell each other about their texts and together try to find out who A is.
